The ultimate romantic stay at the Arctic Gourmet Cabins, near Kiruna and a visit to the Ice Hotel

If you are looking for a quiet stay not far from the famous city in the North, Kiruna, in Swedish Lapland, with fantastic food in the middle of the nature, don’t look any further, we have found the perfect place for you, for the ultimate romantic stay, at the Arctic Gourmet Cabins.

Only 20 kilometers away from Kiruna, Johan and his family have built and opened the Arctic Gourmet Cabins, about 6 years ago.
Only two cabins, a sauna and a jacuzzi, a 9 square meters restaurant and a personal chef, Johan, for a very luxurious experience.

The cabins

Equipped with a very comfortable bed, a salon space and basic kitchen amenities (fridge and boiler), the room has everything you might need during your stay there. For shower, you will reach a shared cabin outside, only few meters away with perfectly warm water and direct access to the sauna. The toilets, just next to it, are with an incinerator and shared, but are perfectly clean, as every other part of the cabins.
The jacuzzi, even without bubbles, is the perfect spot to try to catch some Northern Lights, so is your cabins, with the open windows to the surroundings nature.
Everything is perfectly well thought, and you will find bathrobe and slippers for the sauna and jacuzzi in your room.

The dinner

What can get better than to discover the local gastronomy with a personal chef ? Nothing, really.
Johan met his wife when he was a chef at the Ice Hotel, not far from the cabin, and we are glad he left his position there to build his own – and probably one of the smallest one in the world – restaurant in Kiruna.

First, you will start with a glass of Champagne, by the fire, outside the restaurant. Bring you jacket and your loved one and enjoy this very unique moment.

Then, let the show begin ! Johan will, of course, adjust to any special diet you might have, should you just let him know in advance. To quote Johan: “You will be served a set 4-course menu based on local specialities like reindeer, moose, whitefish and arctic char, as well as local berries from the forest around the cabins”. It is definitely the best part of the stay, don’t miss it. And the wine pairing it totally worth it. And don’t forget to check for the Northern Lights while having dinner.

On the next morning, you will enjoy a delicious breakfast with a forest view. Johan will have prepared everything for you the night before: fruit juice, tea, coffee, fruits, cheese and charcuterie, boiled eggs and cereals. Everything is there!

Activities at the Arctic Gourmet Cabins

Johan can help you organise several activities while you are staying at the cabin: snowmobiles, ice fishing, horse riding moose safari and dog-sledding! As we have done previously snowmobile in Iceland and dog-sledding in Skaulo, we wanted to do the horse riding safari or the ice fishing. François was really into spotting animals and especially moose, so we ended up choosing the horse riding moose safari.

Detailed information about activities at the Arctic Gourmet Cabins

Don’t hesitate to contact Johan and his wife directly for more information at +46735457094 or at INFO@ARCTICGOURMETCABIN.COM

Snowmobile

Price: 2350 SEK per person Duration: 9.40am- 2.30pm – Available: December- March
Warning: To be able to join this tour a valid driving license (car/ mc) is required and has to be shown to the guide.

We absolutely love snowmobile, however we always find it a little too expensive. If you have never done it before, Lapland is the perfect place to try it!

Ice fishing

Price: 1000 SEK per person Duration: 9.00am-2pm
Available: December- April

We would have loved to find the time to try Ice fishing! Unfortunately, as they say, to choose it to renounce. It’s on our list for our next time in Lapland though!

Horse riding moose safari

Price: 1995 SEK per person Duration: 9.40am- 2.30pm
Available: December- April
Minimum age: 12 years – Maximum weight: 90 kg
Riding experience: Not necessary but good physical health

This is the activity we had chosen to do while we were staying at the Arctic Gourmet Cabins. The weather nor the snow were that great on that day and we did not get to see any moose (it was still too warm and too early in the season). It was really nice to do horse riding in the snow though! Only few minutes driving from the cabin, you will take care of the horses and get them ready for the ride, then ride in the forest for about 1h. It is true that you do not need any previous riding experience, you will be perfectly guided by Sarah.
Eventually, you will share a local lunch at the farm. Overall, we found this day a little too expensive for what we got, but it was still a memorable experience.

Dog-sledding

Different options available, starting from 1700 SEK per Person Duration: 9,30am- 2 pm

We would strongly recommend to do Dog-sledding at least once while you are in Lapland. It really is an exceptional experience. The packs we have met were lovely, super well taken care of and absolutely blissed to get to go sledding!

Hiking

Probably our favourite activity while we were there! If property equipped (as we mentioned before on our article about Skaulo), you should be perfectly ready to hike in the snow, even with -15 degrees out there. About 20 kilometers from the cabin, you will find, at the end of the road, Nikkaluokta. The mountains will offer some stunning landscapes and incredible sceneries, for a couple of hours hike or even more! For the more sportive one, the Kungsleden trail can even take you all the way North until Abisko.

Ice hotel visit

The Ice hotel is the place to visit while you are in Kiruna or nearby. It is truly a spectacular place, all made of ice. You do not need to spend the night there to visit the Ice Hotel. A tour of the rooms, the museum part and the Ice bar is possible for a couple of hours everyday. Try to get there early, before the first guests start to check-in in the rooms.

The unique Ice hotel – which is built every year, and is different every year – is only open from mid-December, so it was closed when we came. However, the Ice Hotel 365 is open all year long and refrigerated to stay as cold as needed, and it’s already quite an experience!

Each room is different and has its own theme. All the furniture, beds, chairs, table, is made of ice. If you sleep there, a special sleeping bag will be provided for you. Only the mattress in the room will not be made of ice, and some chair covers as well. It was fun for the pictures, but let’s be honest, I would not have stayed much longer sitting there. You will also learn n about the Ice hotel origins and construction, and about artists building the rooms.

The bar of the Ice Hotel
The bar of the Ice Hotel

End your visit of the Ice hotel at the Ice bar. You will probably be already completely frozen by that time so you better not neglect gloves and socks for your visit. Hence, it will probably be the best moment to enjoy a cold beer, served in an ice glass… Watch your glass, starting to melt as soon as you start to drink it. As I said, quite an experience. And at least, beers don’t warm up in there!

A two nights stay is a great getaway weekend idea from Stockholm, with only 2 hours flight to reach Kiruna.

Looks gorgeous in the photos! The ice hotel in particular is incredible, not sure I’d actually want to stay there but it’d be cool to visit and grab a drink 🙂

What a beautiful place to stay, loved that view over breakfast. Dog sledding in Lapland is on my bucket list, so hope we make it there one day. I couldn’t stay in the ice hotel either, but it would be a great experience to have a drink there.
